Harper Tournament

he Leakey Eagles ran into a very good aggressive Sonora team Thursday in the Harper Tournament and got beat 42-64. They jumped on us early with a good press and then basically just out ran us down the floor for pretty much the first half. We were down 11-27 at the end of the first quarter. Things didn't get any better the second quarter getting out scored 5-16 and trailing 16-43 at half. I don't think we handled the press that bad. I was more disappointed that we kept getting out ran down the floor time after time. Sonora did a great job of pushing the ball down the floor and we just didn't adjust to the speed of the game until the second half. The second half we out scored them 26-21 but was to far behind to make a real run at them. Sarah Reagor had a very good offensive game scoring 20 points followed by Chastity Thompson with 11.
The second game of the tourney we played the Sonora JV. We won that one 64-27. We were able to get a lot of points through turnovers and transitions in this game. We were not playing the same caliber of competition as the game before but we were able to get some confidence back and execute what we wanted to do. We had three girls score 12 points, Keena Auld, Chastity Thompson and Sarah Reagor. Our guards did a great job of getting the ball inside to the open person. We had the size and strength advantage and the guards did a nice job a recognizing it and making good entry passes. The Lady Eagles are 4-1 for the season.

The Leakey Boys started the Harper Tournament with a 56-31 win over Center Point Thursday night. we were able to build a 25-12 halftime lead and then continued to build on it in the second half. We are doing some good things out there on the floor. Defensively we are ahead of our offense right now. That is what is keeping us in games and allowing us to get some wins. Our offense is not flowing very right now. with this system I put in this year, it is taking some time for the players to feel comfortable in it. As our execution gets better and our understanding of the plays gets better, I think we will put more points on the board and that will make our defense that much better. Tanner Pannell had 13 points, Billy Chisum 10 and Drew Shackelford led us in scoring with 15.
The second game of the tournament we played a good Harper team. We lost that one 49-55. Harper was a tough team for us to match up against. We started out in a zone which we play pretty good. They had some players that shot the three pointer very well and we had to come out of that defense mid way through the first quarter. Our man to man defense is looking pretty good. we are understanding help defense and doing a good job of playing on ball defense. We did have some match up problems at the guard spot. Harper had two very quick guards that gave us some problems. I thought we adjusted to them pretty good though throughout the game. We got off to a slow start in the first quarter, trailing 7-25 after one quarter. We played a much better second quarter out scoring them 15-7. The second we continued to cut into the lead and made a good run at them in fourth quarter. I am really happy with the way this group battles hard and never gives up. We have trailed by some large margins this year only to see them come back in the second quarter. Ty Pannell led the scoring with 13, followed by Emilio Navvaro with 11 and Tanner Pannell with 10. The boys are 2-2 on the season and will play Saturday in Harper again.
