Flex Calendar 2008-2009

Dear Parents,
This letter is to inform you that the Texas Education Agency
(TEA) has granted a waiver for an optional flexible year program
for the 2008-2009 school year. The purpose of the program is to
provide intensive instruction for students not meeting a passing
standard on TAKS or promotion standards. Students who qualify for
the program must attend all ten remedial days in order to receive
credit for a course and/or be promoted to the next grade.
We are also incorporating the “flex calendar” as an incentive for
students to complete the school year ten days early. Our goal is to
improve attendance and student performance. Students will “earn”
flex days in order to be dismissed from school on May 15, 2009;
otherwise, the last day of instruction is May 29th. The following
stipulations will be in place in order to qualify:
Students may not be absent more than 10 days. This does not include
extra-curricular days or days in which students return from the
doctor the same day as their appointment.
Students must have an overall average of 75% for the school year;
this will be computed on May 1st.
Students must pass all of the four core classes (English, math,
science and social studies) and meet promotion requirements for
grades 3, 5 & 8.
Students must pass TAKS and EOC exams.
Three tardies will equal 1 absence.
Students will receive one “free” tardy per semester.
Attached, is the 2008-2009 calendar approved by the Board of Trustees. The staff and site-based committee recommended a 9-week marking period which has been incorporated. This will allow more instructional time throughout the school year. Again, our goal is for students to improve their attendance and performance in order to be released on May 15th.
If you have any questions regarding the calendar or program, please feel free to call me at 232.5595 ext. 257.
Thank you,
Lorri González
